Having just tested the Lexus NX200 t it seems fitting that BMW has just launched the 2016 BMW X1, it’s smallest crossover, into a very competitive market. We say crossover but BMW calls it a Sports Activity Vehicle. They have sold 61,974 in the US to date. This new one has a roomier interior, is more efficient and is packed with more technology.

The model offered at launch will be the  BMW X1 xDrive28i featuring a 2.0-liter Twin Turbo 4-cylinder engine from BMW’s new family of modular engines giving  228 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque at 1,250 rpm, and mated  to the 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. This is down on the outgoing model’s 240 hp and 260 lb-ft. BMW claim a 0-60  time of 6.3 seconds.

An all new version of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and newly developed chassis technology all help to lower the car’s overall weight and offset the slightly lower power numbers. The compact, low-weight and efficient all-wheel-drive system distributes the engine’s power between the front and rear axle exactly when needed. Dynamic Stability Control) allows the system to act preemptively to counteract any tendency for over steer or under steer.  The system also includes Hill Descent Control.

The Driving Dynamic Control switch on the center console allows the driver to give the car’s set-up an even sportier, more comfort-oriented or efficiency-optimized character with  3distinct modes, g up COMFORT, SPORT or ECO PRO. This adapts the responses of the accelerator pedal and steering as well as shift characteristics of the automatic transmission.

The BMW X1 is now the roomiest in it’s class putting it ahead of the Mercedes GLA and the Audi Q3.  A power-folding feature enables the rear seats to be folded at the touch of a button inside the luggage compartment. Cargo space has been increased by more than 15 percent (based on European measurements) allowing plenty of storage practicality.

Standard equipment also includes front fog-lamps, alarm with remote-controlled central locking and keyless engine ignition, electric window controls, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, a multifunction leather steering wheel adjustable for height and reach, a rain sensor including automatic headlight control and Dynamic Cruise Control.

Options include real leather, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, an 8.8-inch infotainment display (replacing a 6.5-inch unit), LED headlights, a head-up display, and active safety tech including adaptive cruise control with a Stop & Go function, a pedestrian warning system, and City Collision Mitigation. A rear-view camera is an option along with Park Distance Control.

The all new 2016 BMW X1 offers standard 18-inch run-flat all-season tires with non-run-flat all seasons and a space saver spare available as a no-cost option for the first time. Sport oriented customers can choose 19-inch run-flat performance tires as optional equipment.

The M Sport package, available later this year, provides a sportier, quicker and slicker look and feel thanks to the 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission featuring steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters supported by M Steering Wheel and M Sport suspension and Sport Seats.

The 2016 BMW X1 xDrive28i will arrive in US showrooms in Fall 2015.
