The SUV invasion continues, but the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta is still here — stubbornly refusing to die. In this review, I take the range-topping 2026 Volkswagen Jetta SE for a drive to find out whether there’s still a reason to buy a compact sedan in a world obsessed with SUVs. The 2026 Jetta keeps its 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired exclusively with an automatic transmission. Sadly, the six-speed manual is gone. On the plus side, VW claims up to 40 mpg on the highway. I also look at the Jetta’s interior, technology, comfort, trunk space, handling and driving dynamics — including why this supposedly sensible little sedan is surprisingly entertaining on a twisty road. But it isn't perfect. The top-of-the-line SE still doesn't have a passenger-seat height adjustment, and somehow VW has forgotten that rear passengers might occasionally enjoy having air-conditioning vents. So is the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta a forgotten bargain, or is the compact sedan simply fighting a losing battle against SUVs? But how different are they really?
